Rice' University’s original GLBT organization, the Rice Gay and Lesbian Support Group, was formed in 1979, the same year as the first official Houston Pride Parade. The group’s founder, Annise Parker—today Houston’s Mayor—is pictured on the top row, fourth from the left. As indicated by the closet door on the organization's seal, it was a few more years before many of the members felt comfortable about coming out. This image from the 1983 Rice yearbook, replete with humorous pseudonyms and bags on heads to preserve anonymity, is a far cry from the pride displayed by members of the group in its various later incarnations and off-shoots (Gays and Lesbians of Rice - GALOR, Rice PRIDE, GATHER, Rice Gay and Lesbian Alumni - GALA, and the present day Queers & Allies or "Q&A").

Rice University is committed to affirmative action and equal opportunity in education and employment.
Rice does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, age, disability or veteran status.

So say Rice’s policies on admission and employment, but that’s only part of the story. Sure, we don’t discriminate, but more than that, ours is an open, welcoming, nurturing community where tolerance is expected and diversity is celebrated. Our differences we value for the unique perspectives they provide, but no difference is more important than our common humanity.
